What is Sex-Linked Inheritance?
Sex-linked recessive mutations sit on the Z chromosome. In budgerigars, cocks have ZZ chromosomes and hens have ZW. Because hens have only one Z, they cannot be split for any sex-linked mutation — they are either visual or normal. Cocks can be visual, split, or normal. This single rule unlocks the auto-sex pairing trick: pair a visual sex-linked cock with a Normal hen, and every daughter is visual (carries the cock's mutation), every son is split (carries the gene but does not show it). Chicks can be sexed by colour at hatch, eliminating DNA tests.

No. Hens are ZW with only one Z chromosome. Sex-linked recessive mutations require one copy on the Z to express — hens either show the mutation visually or do not carry it. The split state is impossible for hens at all six sex-linked loci.
What is the auto-sex pairing trick?
Pair a visual sex-linked cock with a Normal hen. All daughters inherit the mutant Z from the father and show the mutation visually. All sons inherit one mutant Z from the father (split) and one Normal Z from the mother (so they look Normal). Chicks can be sexed by colour at hatch.
